Origin complex

Complex. The term entered popular language, but not everyone knows how and why a complex is so strong in the mind of an individual.

Let us assume that a young child is called stupid by his parents and that is repeated several times whenever he commits an act of disobedience.

In our early years, our rational faculty has not developed yet. When a parent – a person whom the child depends on to survive and that he considers almost demigod – makes such a statement, the boy believes without judging, and that information is stored in his unconscious. It is not questioned, because, at this stage of life, the individual has no judgment. His reasoning has not developed yet. It is not questioned later on because it is unconscious.

This information – I’m stupid – is stored in his unconscious. Being unconscious, the boy does not know that he carries it within his mind. As an adult, his life will be impaired because, whenever he is faced with situations where he needs to use his talent, he blocks it because he is convinced – unconsciously – that he is stupid.

I have witnessed cases where an individual sabotages, albeit unconsciously, his career by judging himself incapable.

To remove this complex, it has to be brought from consciousness in a process of psychological analysis sometimes lengthy.

One last comment. Do not blame your parents for your complexes. Probably, they were treated in the same way by their parents. The ancient Greeks said that a person carries the curses of three generations of ancestors. Our Bible attributes to us the sin of Adam and Eve.

A final lesson. Watch your words when you talk to children. Words are powerful, and young children cannot judge the veracity of them.

I was involved in the business world, as an executive of large companies and university professor since recently. I was the president CSN, the largest steel-mill of Latin America and was responsible for its turn-around. My first encounter with the teachings of the Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung, one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th Century, was during my midlife crisis. Reading "Man and his Symbols" at that time, inspired me to go into Jungian analysis and to begin devouring the writings of Jung and his disciples. Since then, I've been studying psychology, especially Jungian psychology and, after reaching my seventies, I decided to become a full time writer, specializing on books on Jungian psychology and psychological thrillers. Every masterpiece of literature can be absorbed through multiple interpretations, and yield powerful insights for our daily lives. My first Jungian book, “The Little Prince for Grown-ups“, in its fourth edition in Brazil, was based on the famous book of Saint-Exupéry. The second, - “The Jungian Bible” - interprets some stories of the Old Testament and world myths. As I get older and, with a bit of luck, wiser, I want to pass on to the younger generations the lessons life has taught me. Jesus Christ taught that it was easier to sell ideas with stories. Following the Master, I published in English "The Amazon Shaman" and "In Search of Happiness", two psychological thrillers around the theme of happiness.

  1. “This information … is stored in his unconscious”. Roberto, this is the crux of the matter. WHY was it stored in his UNCONSCIOUS, not in his CONSCIOUSNESS? You have not approached this essential question in your post.

  2. Roberto, I am going to insist: I still do not know how you think a complex is born, because I haven’t seen any hint on what you think about HOW an experience is stored in the UNCONSCIOUS, not in the conscious. And I can tell you: historically, there are THREE answers, all of which I deem equaly valid, to that question.
