Wisdom of Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell, the great mythologist of the XX century, said:
The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.
What are you? If you are a medical doctor, you may answer: “I´m a doctor¨. A scientist may answer: I´m a scientist:” Both are wrong. This is their Persona, this is how they appear to the world. The doctor is not a doctor, but a unique individual that choose to be trained and to work as a doctor. Likewise, the scientist.
Jungian psychology teaches that we carry many archetypes inside our psyche. The Persona is one, the Ego, another. Many persons act through their Personas, but think that their Egos direct their actions. They also think of themselves as rational persons. Again, they are wrong. Human beings act rationally for a part of their waking life. Under the grip of an emotion, the Ego loses control to a Complex assumes the command. Tricks of the unconscious.
The Self is the real force inside our psyche. It commands our life. Our Ego may decide not to obey the Self, but we will pay the price.
Life –the Self – sends us signs every time we deviate from the road intended for us. The initial signs are gentle, but, if we do not pay attention to them, they will get strong, and hurt us. That is why we should pay attention to the messages the Self sends us to correct our journey through life.
That is the essence of Campbell´s advice – be who you are or, if you prefer, be who you are programmed to be. This is a guarantee for a happy life.
I am Roberto Lima Netto, a writer who seeks to present, in easy words, the ideas of Carl Jung and of notable mystics and sages. I also write fiction, always trying to convey lessons of life. After all, Jesus taught us that the stories are the best way to present ideas. Some of my books are: The Little Prince for Grownups, The Jungian Bible, The Amazon Shaman and In Search of Happiness, and A Boy, a metaphor for life, all available in Amazon and Kindle.
