The Enigmatic Sayings of Jesus – Gospel of Thomas, Saying #3

Gospel of Thomas # 3

Saying #3

Jesus says: “If those who lead you say to you: ‘Look, the kingdom is in the sky!’ then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you: ‘It is in the sea,’ then the fishes will precede you. Rather, the kingdom is inside of you and outside of you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not come to know yourselves, then you exist in poverty, and you are poverty.”

Symbolic sayings can have different interpretations, and more than one can be correct. Especially on complex issues, the symbolic language is the only one that may pass on the message. In my view, Jesus used this symbolic way of conveying his teachings on purpose, knowing that, especially at the time he lived on earth, the rational faculties of the majority of his followers were less developed.
With this warning, I will introduce my reading of this third saying of Jesus.
Human beings have a tendency to project into God the image of an all powerful ruler. Although this is a way of looking at Him, I prefer to see God as an all powerful energy, without any human characteristics. But God, this major energy that created the universe, is incomprehensible to the human mind. The Bible confirms my understanding in several places.
Behold, God is great, and we know him not …(Job 36:26)
All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.(Matthew 11:27)
For who hath known the mind of the Lord? …(Romans 11:34))
Our thinking function cannot grasp such a large and powerful energy that is God. Maybe the mystics could get close to knowing him, but they cannot transmit their knowledge to us; our languages are imperfect for this task.
We cannot know this major Force that is God, but we can approach the Image of God that lives inside our mind. Jung said that the human psyche is intrinsically religious and that we have, in our psyche, an archetype, the Self, that he calls the Image of God.
I consider this Image of God inside our psyche the God within. Who put it inside our psyche? Evidently this all powerful energy we call God. Being impossible to understand Him, being impossible to know Him, being impossible to talk to Him, He gave us the possibility of relating to His Image inside our psyche.
I understand that the meaning of Jesus words in this third saying is that when you come to know yourselves, when we come to know the personalities that we keep in our unconscious, then we can know God. Not the major energy that created the universe, but the image that He placed inside our psyche – the Self – with the objective, I think, of being known indirectly.
Know yourself. This advice is in the entrance of the Temple of Apollo em Delphi, Greece, This advice was repeated by Socrates. This advice was given to us by Jesus, the greatest prophet that came to Earth to help us, to help our souls to climb the ladder that may take us to heaven.

I am Roberto Lima Netto, and I believe that our objective in life is to be happy and that Spirituality and Jungian psychology, my main areas of interest, can help us in this search for happiness. I am a writer. Some of my books are “The Little Prince for Grown-ups”, “The Jungian Bible”, “The Amazon Shaman” and “In Search of Happiness”. Evangelho de Tomé – Provérbio # 3

Quem conheceu a mente do Senhor? … (Romanos 11:34))

I was involved in the business world, as an executive of large companies and university professor since recently. I was the president CSN, the largest steel-mill of Latin America and was responsible for its turn-around. My first encounter with the teachings of the Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung, one of the greatest geniuses of the 20th Century, was during my midlife crisis. Reading "Man and his Symbols" at that time, inspired me to go into Jungian analysis and to begin devouring the writings of Jung and his disciples. Since then, I've been studying psychology, especially Jungian psychology and, after reaching my seventies, I decided to become a full time writer, specializing on books on Jungian psychology and psychological thrillers. Every masterpiece of literature can be absorbed through multiple interpretations, and yield powerful insights for our daily lives. My first Jungian book, “The Little Prince for Grown-ups“, in its fourth edition in Brazil, was based on the famous book of Saint-Exupéry. The second, - “The Jungian Bible” - interprets some stories of the Old Testament and world myths. As I get older and, with a bit of luck, wiser, I want to pass on to the younger generations the lessons life has taught me. Jesus Christ taught that it was easier to sell ideas with stories. Following the Master, I published in English "The Amazon Shaman" and "In Search of Happiness", two psychological thrillers around the theme of happiness.
